Every cook knows it’s important to make guests comfortable so they can fully appreciate the meal. Kent Rathbun is not just any cook — he’s a celebrity chef who’s knocked Bobby Flay out of an Iron Chef competition and been nominated for the Beard Award four times. When he’s not working at one of his restaurants, Rathbun likes to host friends, family and charity events at his home. He and his wife designed their house, including an outdoor kitchen and expansive patio area, to comfortably accommodate large groups of people. In the hot Texas climate, fans were a necessity.
Rathbun had previously installed a Big Ass Fan in one of his restaurants. “When I built my house I said I had to have one of them,” he said. He ended up with seven: one Isis and six Haiku fans. What appealed to him first were their looks. “They’re beautiful,” he said. Rathbun also appreciates the fact that they provide comfort year-round, with the help of heaters installed near the fans. “In winter the fans push the heated air down to the patio,” he said. “They cool us in summer and keep us warm in winter.” And Rathbun said there’s one other huge benefit: fewer flying insects. That’s a real appetite boost.
