Case Study: Canadian School Board Adopts Innovative Approach For Improving Air Quality

We were looking for a practical approach to occupant comfort where major mechanical ventilation systems upgrades are not a feasible option at this time. The BAF technical team has helped us to find not only qualitative, but also quantitative results to marginal airflows and comfort in some of our older schools. The UV-C system integrated within the fans helps not only to provide air movement, but also to create an upper room zone that does not rely on moving air through a ductwork system. The air treatment takes place near the source of contamination and therefore helps to improve air quality quickly within the room. Miro Vala, P.Eng. The Gist

Problem

The Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) needed to increase air flow in its schools in order to improve air quality for staff and students alike. With the budget always of concern, the solution needed to not only work, but do so in a sustainable, cost-effective manner.

Solution

Having recently worked with Big Ass Fans (BAF), as well as understanding increased recommendations around airflow from government and health officials, project managers and decision makers at OCSB looked to BAF’s Clean Air System Haiku UV-C fans to solve the problem at hand.

Results

After carefully working with BAF on airflow models specific to their spaces, OCSB facility managers felt they were not only improving the air quality, but providing comfort and cooling benefits as well. The (200+) Haiku UV-C fans will be installed in two stages this year and will be effective at not only destroying SARS-CoV-2† but also other airborne pathogens such as the common cold and influenza A & B.

The Haiku UV-C fans happened to be the perfect solution for two schools where A/C was not an option. Unlike common HEPA filters and in-duct solutions, Haiku UV-C treats occupant level air through the unique combination of constant room air changes passing through an upper room zone created by the upwardly projected UV-C fixture.

UV-C TECHNOLOGY: How IT WORKS

††The Big Ass Fans Clean Air System UVGI (UV-C) Antimicrobial Technology kills 99.9% of viruses in the air in 20 minutes. Virus testing includes SARS-CoV-2 and PhiX174 bacteriophage. All ion and UV-C testing was completed in enclosed indoor spaces. In outdoor spaces, overhead and directional fans can increase dilution airflow in occupied spaces. Fan operating speed is proportional to the airflow delivered by the fan. Increased operating speed will increase the generation of ions for fans with ionization technologies. Increased operating speed will increase the rate of room air mixing for fans with ionization or UV-C technologies. ^Tested to Industry Standard UL 2998 & UL 867
